I notice that a lot of the other reviewers complain about the 'stray dogs and the stench of urin'. I wasn't bothered by that or of the many shops along the way. Sri Lanka is one of the poorer countries in the world, and emerged from violent conflict not too long ago, so I can accept that everything is not... More

My husband and I are both fit so we didn't find the walk that difficult. So we weren't overly disappointed when we got to the top and found a Buddha with flashing lights around it, lots of stray dogs, stinking urinals and obstructed views of the landscape. If you were unfit and not spiritual you could end up wondering why... More

Very dificult road, many stairs that smells from urine. The sunrise is pretty but you can barely see it, since the roof of the building you standing on it covers it. We are couple who likes hikes and wouldn't recomend this one.Long and no sights along the way. More

Started walking at 1.30am and arrived at top at 4.30am. Sunrise began at 6.30am and was worth the wait. Freezing cold till the sun came up.Took 2 hours to descend. The whole walk is on steps so is very relentlessly steep. Very crowded at top while waiting for sunrise. More

we climbed the peak with a guide (though you dont need one) as he was part of the package we paid for already. we were told that it was arduous and recommended different clothing. But i guess things have moved on. Now there is a tea shop with blaring music every 10 minutes - good distraction during the climb. the... More

We are not fit and still managed the climb. Yes it's arduous, but it is absolutely worth it to see the sunrise and the mysterious shadow. We started at 2.15 am (later than planned) and it took us three hours at a steady pace, arriving at 5.30 am. We had one stop for tea. It is imperitive if you are... More

heed the advice and start at 2am, it took me 2 3/4 hrs and i'm not the fittest, the town itself is littered with many stalls selling the same tatt but the walk itself has many stalls which are very welcoming at times. gentle start leading to punishing middle and easier top. it is very cold whilst waiting for sunrise.... After reading so many positive reviews on the web and in guidebooks we were expecting something spectacular. What we found was a huge crowd of people walking up the stairs that look like a marketplace for the most part. Maybe it just is not the kind of 'spiritual experience' we thought it would be. [I cannot imagine how the climb... More

As a 41 year-old with average fitness and no training for this climb, I was very worried by some of the reviews below and I almost cancelled as I was concerned that the injuries would ruin the next week of my holidays if I couldn' t walk properly. I'm glad I went ahead! It's demanding, but it's not as gruelling... More
