If you are planning a trip to Doi Suthep by local transport, there is a syndicate that operates the route from the city. Do be careful and do bargain. Upon arrival, there are lots of stalls selling all sorts of normal souvenirs and food. My immediate impression was 'oh dear, too commercial'. The climb up to the temple was tiring...

You go to NYC- you see the Statue of Liberty, you go to Paris- you see the Eiffel Tower, and you go to Chiang Mai- you see Wat That Doi Suthep. Was everything I expected and I'm glad that I made the voyage there.

This is well worth the visit. It was bling to the enth degree, but amazing with it.
The trip up the hill was a bit of an eye opener and Im so glad we werent driving. Do take the little red buses which are far cheaper than taxis. Do barter though as we found ourselves paying way more than locals...

Situated an hour's ride out of Chiang Mai we visited this Wat not as part of a tour but on our own by hiring a car.
All guide books state that there is a funicular to the top but I could not locate it. Not that it matters. Just about 250 steps to climb.
