I visited the Dzong in the winter of 2009 and in the summer of 2011. The scenery surrounding the Dzong is beautiful and the Dzong's architecture was impressive. It is 1 of my favorite places to visit in Bhutan.

It was constructed by Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal in 1637–38(He was a Tibetan Lama and unified the Bhutan), it was administrative centre and the seat of the Government of Bhutan until 1955. The Dzong houses the sacred relics of the southern Drukpa Kagyu school including the Rangjung Kasarpani, and the sacred remains of Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal.

This Dzong definitely had the best artwork of all the Dzong's I visited in Bhutan. It was quite impressive. I arrived in Bhutan the day after they had a huge earthquake in Northern India so there was some damage to the stupa on the grounds which was interesting to see.

It is the most impressive architectural marvel of Bhutan. Enormous, like other dzongs, still serves as an administrative centre while house religious community. Is the dzong to visit if you are short of time. I am surprised does not have Unesco heritage site awarded!
