If you are anywhere in Dakar, you will see this monument. Yes, we went up the stairs, but no we did not pay to go in. You can get the same views from the Light House near by. The other reviews are right in it just being a very bad decision by Wade to try to make money. Why would... More

Well climbing the stairs to get to the statue is really a hectic workout, prepare yourself mentally. Then when u get to the entrance, u decide to get to the top or not (price difference). I chose not to and paid 3.000F CFA. I wasn't much interested in what the tour guide had to say, I was interested in the... More

It's an impressively tall statue, built by the North Koreans to satisfy a $27 million urge by former Pres. Wade to leave behind a grand monument, and to collect 35% of fees. Very controversial, as to whether it should have been built given other pressing needs, truly represents Africa, the Stalinist style, the semi nude figures (in a Muslim country).... More

They spent too much money on this huge statue when the streets are littered with garbage. More

An impressive testament to the African diaspora, though I was surprised to learn that it was built by the Chinese. Pricey admission. Would have liked to see more information about the concept of building this enormous monument. More

To get to the top u have to climb alot of stairs. When u do get to the top you see the view of the city, a lighthouse, Dakar airport etc. we did not go to the top of the monuments head with the elevator coz v decided the view might be the same as was down. However you could... More

It's hard to believe President Wade made shady deals with the N. Koreans to get this built, but it's def. the statue of liberty of W. Africa, has an amazing view, and keep in good conditions for Senegal standards. It doesn't take long to walk around and take some photos, a must see for the city. More
