They use real African elephants rather than Asian elephants. Riding African elephants was fantastic and was a different experience to riding Asian elephants. You get to sit on a platform with Asian elephants but you have a saddle and stirrups with the African elephants.

1. Great way to see the National Park. Its great for viewing non-carnivores since you...

Had a great time riding "Janet" and "Emily" the 2 elephants our family were on. Although we didn't get to see many animals (this ride really isn't about seeing wild animals) as the ride is only for about an hour you do get to interact with the elephants somewhat. The guide is very good as he managed to get my...

We had such a good time on our elephant-back safari! We loved meeting the elephants and enjoying the cool morning. We saw a few animals, but not many, the experience was more about the elephants than anything else. As a surprise, when we got back, Sylvester the Cheetah was waiting for us! He's an orphaned cheetah and was adorable. It...

We started the second last day of a month's worth of adventures in Africa with this amazing experience. (My son jumped off the Zambezi bridge a few hours later!) The elephants here are delightful and it was almost a spiritual experience lumbering along with them. My daughter and I had a momma elephant and her tiny babe followed us on...

The term safari is misleading here. This was a elephant back ride and an elephant encounter which was terribly overpriced. It was well organized and everything ran on schedule however the only animals we saw were the elephants we were riding and a vulture. As one previous reviewer advised it is probably much more worth your time to do a...

From other reviews, it seems that those who booked the elephant-back safari with Wild Horizons got a slightly different experience than those who booked with Shearwater Adventures.
My elephant-back safari was through Shearwater and was in the afternoon. There were only five of us tourists, so three elephants were brought out. I enjoyed having my own elephant, Doma, and a...

Despite the early, cold drive to the reserve from our hotel in town, it was worth the effort and expense.
You have to be a bit nimble to get onto the saddle, but we had all age ranges in the group...kids to Grandmas. We had never ridden a horse before, but they have a platform with a ramp leading up...

I was, quite frankly, terrified about riding an elephant, but really wanted to do it anyway! I am scared of heights and was worrying about how high off the ground I would feel, and how hard it would be to get on the elephant. It turns out I needn't have worried - they have a ramp that you climb up...
