I had so much fun at the lesson/demonstration that Ray gave at Hickatee Cottages, that I decided to take a private lesson the next day in Punta Gorda. Ray is a very skilled drummer and you will have lots of fun learning about Garifuna drumming.

The hands-on way to learn about Garifuna drumming and culture.Learn about the rich history and culture of the Garifuna while learning the different traditional drumbeats that influence music throughout Belize and Central America.Located in the peaceful coastal town of Punta Gorda, Belize, Warasa and its founder, local drummer Ronald Raymond McDonald, provide lessons to suit everyone. Lessons on drum-making, Garifuna language, singing and dancing are also available, as well as performances by Warasa Garifuna drum group. Warasa is now featured in the 2011 editions of Lonely Planet Belize and Moon Belize guidebooks.

And not to worry if you haven't, just enjoy Ray's... Ray is a very patient, friendly teacher. He made sure my two friends and I were having fun, and we played all the basic Garifuna rhythms. Ray is a delightful,and talented drummer. We first met him at Hickatee Cottages for his Wednesday night drumming demonstration, then were treated to another performance with his group and dancers. Both events were fun and interesting and me trying to dance the Punta was something else, too. He is so much fun, but also deadly serious about restoring the Garifuna...

I enjoyed an evening of Garifuna drumming and instruction provided every Wednesday night at Hickatee Cottages. Ray is a talented drummer and has a knack for sharing basic information about Garifuna drumming so you can enjoy sharing rhythms with him from the start. I didn't attend the school but hope to on a future trip. Recommended!

This group cam e to our resort and played for us! they are truly amazing. Not only amazing music, but great sense of humour and gave us a history lesson about their people and how they arrived in Belize. Ronald was very entertaining!

The drumming and the story of the culture were amazing. The school is headed by a 29 year old who is affectionately named "Ronald McDonald".

The spirit and excitement of Garifuna drumming is apparent in Ray's smile and the way he expresses the music. This is a must-do experience for any visitor to Belize. Whether you're a professional drummer or a non-musician you'll have a great time and Ray will have you grooving in minutes!
