The Cataldo Mission is a must see for several reasons. The mission itself is beautiful, and awe inspiring. The Coeur d'Alene natives and some priests built a sacred space here that helped protect the indians and served as a way station for travelers. There is a feeling of reverence throughout the place. We saw the mission from the highway and decided we would stop there on the way back to Spokane. What a great idea! The Visitors' Center is a must and be sure to ask to see the movie, which will give you good information and historical background. I thought this might be an ordinary mission type museum but was very surprised at how incredible this church is. The way this church was built amazes me. Fr. Ravalli was educated in physics, art, engineering in Italy and what he manged to build in Idaho with only an axe, pully and few tools is incredible. The priest created an... More
