Building has no historical significance, but was really built for tourists. There is a nice presentation of how the natives would have used a similar building. It is quite a way away from the Grand Canyon visitor center and marketplace. The free buses do not run out here. There is a cafeteria, rest rooms and even a gas station. We... More

No matter from where you view the Grand Canyon it is truly spectacular - but a visit to the Watchtower and it's awesome view just adds to the experience. This was architecturally delightful, a simple masterpiece of design: functional, reverent and beautiful. More

After visiting the Grand Canyon lookouts on the Southern rim and hiking part way down the Bright Angel trail we headed East through the Park on the way to Page. We were tired from a long day but I still wanted to see the Grand Canyon Desert view Watchtower. So glad I did. It was my favorite view of the... More

Based on a number of comments on TripAdvisor, decided to enter GCNP via the less crowded eastern entrance instead of the main south gate. As such, my family's first view of the Grand canyon was from Desert View. While not as majestic as some points closer to the main village, there were some fine views from here, and the kids... More

Marvelous architecture. Do enter, climb the stairs and see the great inner room. Wonderful view of the canyon, and the land and mesas beyond to the south. More

A disappointing finish for our visit to the Grand Canyon. This is a man made contemporary structure that does not offer very good views. Might be a good way to begin a trip to the canyon, but as a last impression it was very disappointing. If you are coming from the West at the end of the day, I recommend... More

To me, this is a must-stop along the South Rim of the Canyon. Built in the early 30s, the circular watchtower was designed by architect Mary Jane Colter, who was a woman ahead of her time in using indigenous influences to craft tourist buildings that fit their ecosystems and were functional, fun and interesting. This one was modeled on watchtowers... More

Great view of the Colorado River. My kids like climbing to the top of the tower. Can be cramped on the way up and down depending on how busy it is, and their are a lot of stairs to climb. A great place to visit even if you do not want to go to the top of the tower. More

So most people come through the south Gate in the village and usually are egh about the tower they think "don't need to see that, I'm tired, just want to relax " or their in too much of a rush to really see what is there but in truth seeing the tower can be spell binding. This building was commissioned... More
