Located at about half-hour drive from Riga. Between 1941 and 1944 in the Salaspils Concentration camp Nazis had killed more than 53 000 people from all the Europe, among which were more than 7000 children. It is a very sad place in Latvia. Come to honour memory of innocent victims of Nazism. More

I remember the obligatory excursions to Salaspils on USSR times. There is no more to do. More

Unfortunately evil people find collaborators everywhere and this memorial is to remind everyone of the things that took place at this site. It's a reminder to all nationalities and I hope these kind of things will never take place on this continent. More

Went there today (10.4.11) using the directions on here. The hardest part was finding the paved cycle road but once found it was easy to follow and the walk from Darzini Station took just over 10 minutes. I think if people visit the museum of the soviet occupation in Riga before coming here you get a more informed perspective of... More

I set aside a day to travel by train away from the prettiness of Riga to visit the Salaspils Memorial. It also gave me an opportunity to see a bit of rural Latvia and enjoy a walk through the forest. I followed the directions given by Jeff52381. Without them I think I would still be wandering around lost in the... More

I visited Salaspils on 1-Jul-2010. There are no signs posted that mark the route and very few people around to offer directions. When you exit the train from Riga, cross the track and take the path immediately to the right of the shelter. Head right on the paved bicycle path. It meanders but seems to run somewhat parallel to the... More

It was so quiet and peaceful, but during the 15 minutes we visited someone broke into our car and found our laptops, iPods, etc. They even took my son's Legos. Nothing is sacred. More

Although not a traditional stop on the tourism trail the camp is, to my mind, a must see. We traveled by trail, and alighted at Darzini station and set off through the woods. If we had not looked on google earth first we would have been struggling to find the camp as the path winds through the woods and the... More

There are better known former concentration camp sites than Salaspils but none that I have visited so shaped into such a moving memorial to those who lost their lives in these hideous places. Finding the site itself is the first. Buses from Riga central run along the old Moscow Road through Rumbula Forest almost to Salaspils. You can take a... More
