We went to the Opera and was told it was a modern piece of work. The singing was not in English but we atleast expected the subtitles to be but it was not. We could not really follow the story and was a bit disappointed. Apart from that the singing was just in a different class all together. The building... More

Beautiful building, well worth a visit in Budapest. Very central location and easy to find, good public transport connections and lots of great cafes around the area.

We enjoyed the building very much: small but very elegant. The entertainment was less impressive: a potpourri from Hungarian operettas focused on the wine theme, combined with some wine tasting which took place on the scene, with comments in Hungarian. Perhaps the best impression was from the extraordinary violinist who played several Brahms pieces.

We were very lucky to get two tickets just the day before the performance and the seats were no. 7&8 of row 7! The theatre itself was beautiful, classy and very well maintained. I think it is a must do in Budapest.

I wanted to see the ballet but the ticket office is closed on a Sunday to you have to book on line. If, like me, you only have your mobile phone ,this wont work as you MUST print your ticket...so head off to an internet cafe or pop into the Theatre when the ticket office is open. The prices are... I liked internal details but after going to Vienna Opera house I was not impressed. Prices are very reasonable. Staff could be little bit friendlier.

We saw the Hungarian National Ballet perform Onegin here and the theatre was so beautiful it reminded me very much of the opera house in Prague. The day prior to the performance we toured the theatre and learned of its history. During a performance, or at least the ballet, the bar is set up badly, whereas there is no flow... More

It is smaller than I would have expected, but the inside is amazing with marble all around. The outside has two sphinx-like sculptures that don't really fit, but the artist who did the composer scuptures told them if they did not take the sphinxes, they would not get the other scuptures! Hard bargaining! Fun to see.

Was lucky enough to visit the Vienna opera house earlier in the same trip. I am not a fan of Opera, but am a fan of spectacular, historic, preserved buildings - especially those with such a great story as the Budapest Opera Theatre
