I still didnt know what did I get myself into. It took whole day to produce what is on the next page. However one more day for polishing only You can pay small amount (comparing to the price of final product) to try to make something in t jadeite has hardness of -6.5-7 (somewhere in the middle) Glass-5, Topaz-8, Diamond-10 Jadeite

Ask before you buy at the Jade Factory. Most of the jade has been imported from China, and one of the staff members "blames the government for giving the greenstone back to the Maoris". If you want genuine West Coast pounamu, go to the Maori Cultural Centre up the road. The brand "Mountain Jade" is a complete have - this... More

If you are in Hokitika this Jade Factory is worth visiting to look at all the lovely pieces of Jade. There is something to buy in everybody's price range but the nicer pieces are quie pricey. More

A local told me to go to the Jade Factory & speak to Bevan Climo, one of the jade carvers. So I did, and he explained the symbols, the way the jade was carved and even did some carving for me to video tape and photograph him doing it. Then he asked me if I wanted to carve some myself.... More
