Northland's volcanic past is very evident here with the profile of Mt Manaia especially reminding one of similar peaks in Tahiti, Rarotonga and other high islands of the Cook Islands and also Hawai'i. Off shore are other volcanic remnants - the Poor Knights and Hen and Chickens. When driving north from Auckland, the revelation of the Heads and Mt Manaia... More

Come and stay in the beautiful outer harbour area of Whangarei Heads, There are plenty of accommodation places and all year round this is a beautiful area to visit, with its many walking tracks to just going for strolls on the beach or fishing off the rocks. I walked the track over to smugglers bay today and around the busby... More

Very beautiful with great beaches and lots of walks both coastal and bush. Would highly reccommend taking the 25 minute drive out from Whangarei to explore this area of Northland.

Hard to decide which beach to stop at they are all just beautiful, with the last being Ocean Beach for the surf and sand dunes.

The roads are quiet, the coastal drive is spectacular. There are some great walks eg Smugglers and Peachy cove. the views across to One Tree point are really interesting. There are some lovely little villages with beautiful baches. I would like to live there for sure.

Fantastic view, The walk up takes about an hour. I feel it is spoilt because the landscape has been cut into and steps made to make it easier for the walker. Shame this has destroyed some of the native natural beauty. The view from the top makes it worthwhile.
