We splurged on a bird cage carriage for the two of us with platter and wine. I don't drink wine but my husband said it was like drinking vinegar. The platter was great - variety + and very yummy!. The trip itself is worth doing if only to keep a slice of history in operation. The scenery was pretty, the... More

Our trip sealed the wait of five years to come back to Queenstown area to visit with my husband and my mum ( making her first visit to New Zealand and the South Island.) The Kingston Flyer was one of the best trips we took and was a marvelous experience for all three of us. It is a 'must do'... More

If you love trains then this is the trip for you. About 30 mins out of Queenstown the train leaves from Kingston funnily enough. 1/2 hour trip, 1/2 hour there and 1/2 hour back. So many people lining the road to take photos. A must do.

Amazingly well-maintained despite the age of the train. We see a lot of old couples doing this I guess this is somewhat nostalgic. The first time we went the train wasn't running (perhaps fire hazard?) but they ran the locomotive back and forth a few times for tourists to take pictures which is very nice. Went back again on the... More

The return trip from Kingston to Fairlight on the 100 yr old Kingston Flyer is a real treat. The scenary along the way and the sound of steam makes this one of the best steam hauled trips you can make if you are a steam train lover. It starts at Kingston, about a one hour drive from Queenstown in New... More

The drive from Queenstown takes about 40 minutes but then you can relax and enjoy a round trip on this old steam train for a couple of hours. It has an interesting history which you can uncover at Kingston station whist enjoying a coffee in the cafe before leaving. We went into the guards van for the first leg and... More

We were touring in the area and saw the unmistakable smoke and steam of a vintage locomotive. We were able to see the train, but not to ride this time. The station at Kingston has a very good tea room / restaurant. As well as taking the trip, you can see the servicing and turning of the beautifully restored 1927... More

The Kingston Flyer is a fabulous train and beautifully restored. You can walk through the train and take pictures for a small donation. There are options to go for a ride in second class or go first class with a drink and a meal. We thought these options were a bit expensive but if you were a steam buff you... More

Mrs and I did the platter option which put us on the 1st class seats with a fine amount of finger food and a bottle of sparkling wine. The ride took us half an hour to Fairlight, half an hour stopped there and half an hour back, all the while looking at mountains and meadows from our comfortable compartment. The... More
