We love Botanic Gardens and have visited a number around Australia and NZ. This is a gem, not enormous but very well-established, beautifully laid out and maintained. There are wonderful contrasts too, with a steeply sloping wooded area and the lower, flatter, more formal gardens. The aviaries contain colorful birds from NZ and overseas. A must-do for any visitor to...

have to check out the aviary - SID is a real character and very talkative, a fabulous collection of birds
Great place for a traquil outdoor experience. Make sure it is a nice day though. I love looking around the bottom gardens then if you are feeling fit, hike up the fill to the bird aviaries. They are just amazing. The bird are very noisy but that is all part of the visit. The Gardens are well maintained and such...

There are beautiful walks in the Gardens and there is an excellent children's playground The children also love feeding the ducks on the pond and bread is available. The cafe is lovely, with great views of the gardens.

The Dunedin Botanic Gardens are somewhat smaller than those in other centres in New Zealand, but they contain a good variety of plants which are thoughtfully laid out in various themed areas. Enjoyed walking through the university and student area to get to the gardens. They haven't changed much over the years since I went to uni in Dunedin but were a pleasant place to stroll to.
Beautifully laid out & well maintained. Easy to find & accessible for all people. Created to look lovely through all of the seasons.
We visited in Autumn when the flowering shrubs were mostly finished but the hillside location, the wonderful specimen trees and the aviary were well worth seeing. On a sunny day, the graden was full of people enjoying the relaxed atmosphere.
