This trip was recommended to us as a "must do" and we are so glad that it was. We left from Christchurch and I must say that the first stage was fairly boring, but once we reached the mountains it was just one spectacular view after another. We take passengers across New Zealand in comfort and style through some of the most scenic areas of the North and South Islands. It is an experience not just a journey.We have the Overlander train connecting Auckland and Wellington, the Coastal Pacific between Picton and Christchurch and the world famous TranzAlpine from Christchurch to Greymouth.The TranzAlpine goes through the fields of the Canterbury Plains, followed by the spectacular gorges and river valleys of the Waimakariri River. Your train then climbs into the Southern Alps, before descending through lush beech forest to the West Coast town of Greymouth.

This is by far the best way to get back to Christchurch !
The views are lovely and the best part is you don't have to drive the windy roads !
the Viaducts are rellay impressive and some of the tunnels are really long bring something to do as there are a few so so bits but in the whole...

The train ride to and from Greymouth was great. The scenery you see along the way is fantastic. However, in train carriages that do not have reclining seats and a train ride lasting four plus hours, it destroyed the experience. It was spectacular but I wish I had warmer clothes... Hat, gloves and a scarf so I could have spent more time in the outdoor cart! There's food to buy on board if ur hungry too.

We instead drove by car on the route cause we had hired a car, but the view was marvellous. Would suggest to drive to grey mouth instead of using the Train as it's expensive and with the drive u can go @ ur own pace stopping in between to take gr8 pix.

I went just after the second snow fall so the scenery was amazing! It was great as you had viewing stations on the train and a buffet cart to get a cup of coffee. Would recommend it to anyone!

HAve done this trip several times over the years. (we live in Christchurch) and never tire of it. The scenery is truly stunning and the kids love a train trip.
Comfortable seats, good food carriage and clean toilets.

The train is very nice, the food is nice, and the views are cool .. but if you've been traveling around the West Coast, the views are nothing new. It is a great way to travel, but understand that it's a slow train. I would do it again, but understand the TranzScenic is even nicer.

We took one-way Tranz Alpine train from Greymouth to Christchurch.
The scenery on the “journey without any strain” is spectacular. I spent most of my time trying to capture scenes in the open part of the train where one can take photos on either side of the train journey. Recommend take lots and lots of photos as the train speeds...
