We were impressed by the geothermal land, and lucky enough to hear some stories by a worker that was collecting rubbish. The employee gave a little insight to the boiling mud pools and it's place for ancient Maoris. The best part was rubbing some of the dirt/clay together and heaing the 'white clay' story. If you go, try to get... More

I've been to Hell's gate this past weekend, it was a nice walk but prepared for the horrible smell of sulpher.... it's a good place to contemplate.. dipping my feet in the mud at the end was enjoyable. it's not a must though.. More

This geothermal area is a great place to wander around and wonder at the boiling water and mud, steam, sulphur crystallization, lakes and a hot waterfall set in amongst some bush. The paths are gravel and cover 2.4km so I enjoyed the walking and stopping at each attraction and reading the information signs. Afterwards I soaked in the sulphur spa.... More

Hell's Gate was named by George Bernard Shaw and he certainly got it dead on. It was like the entrance to hell, a post-apocalypitc landscape with bubbling and steaming mud pools, mud volcanoes, cooking pools that could cook a pig in two hours...! It was our second thermal park of the day and we still enjoyed it. The only thing... More

We wanted to try the mud spa and so we heading to Hells Gate. It was a bit far from town and I would say it is a bit of costly if we were to compare to another spa centre in Rotorua. We agreed that having only one changing room is definitely an inconveniences to guests especially during peak season... More

The grounds are unkepmt, the facilities are filthy, it is waaay over priced and there is nothing special at all about the place. A waste of time and money. My partner went there and it was so bad we walked as fast as we could so that we didn't waste any more of our time. Such a huge disappointment. More

30 NZD for a walk around some pools with a bit of steam and some bubbling mud. Wasnt overly impressed with it and the smell is ghastly. The staff were really nice but there is not much to it other than a simple track around the pooles and back. I got round in about 15 minutes and that was taking... More

We had a wonderful time in Rotorua New Zealand. There is so much to do and people are really friendly. Nature is absolutely fabulous. We were looking for a mud bath and a dip in a geothermal pool. Hell's Gate pamphlets were at the tourist information centre so we decided to try it out. We paid NZ$ 75 a person... More
