the Theatre Royal has been going strong over 100 years. It is a beautifully restored theatre and has an active and varied program of theatre, comedy, musicals, opera, magicians etc. Worth going there for the surrounds alone.
There is also a small theatre off the side alley (Backspace theatre) for smaller, more intimate works.

If you're coming to Hobart when something is happening at the Theatre Royal, along with going to MONA - Australia's newest and most innovative arts experience - it's a must-do to catch a show at the oldest theatre in Australia. Beautiful restored and maintained, the theatre is a lovely place to enjoy some of Australia's iconic theatrical experiences.

If my memory serves me correctly, this is the oldest continual working theatre in the southern hemisphere. What old world charm it has. The audio in here is excellant. One can only hope that it is not lost to a more modern building.

An amazing accoustically sound theatre. A lovely building to look at, repairs seem to have kept the grandure of some of Australia's old theatres. Well worth a visit, just to look at the inside.
