Using the famous Kuranda Scenic Railway it winds through he rainforest to the village of Kuranda and beyond. For the day tripper Mareeba is the best destination - with a bus connection back to Cairns via Kuranda. For those wanting a train trip through the Australian outback the train continues on to the end of the line at Forsayth. There are side visits to the Chillagoe caves, Cobbold Gorge and the Undara Lava Tubes available. « less

First a confession - I like trains. First admonishment - if you have the time DO THIS. I had the pleasure to take the Savannahlander and enjoyed every moment. This is a journey into the Northern Tablelands and a journey back in time. These are two old cars that rumble through life together and in doing so, educate you on... More

This little train is one of the great train trips of the world. The early morning start in Cairns on Wednesdays can give you no indication for the great journey ahead over the next 4 days. The train meanders up the Kuranda Range, through tropical rainforests and magnificent waterfalls. Then on to open country on the table lands. Next is... More

The four-day Savannahlander train trip with side visits was a unique experience. The train ride is relaxing and the crew knowledgeable and friendly with lots of bush yarns. The train trip and side visits provide a view of local sights but often a view of local culture. Not only are the sights worth seeing the local people are hospitable, helpful... More

We commenced our trip from Cairns with a direct flight to Normanton (very expensive can catch a bus) we then picked up the bus and travelled to Karumba and stayed at the End of the Road Motel which was very good, best sunset almost as good as Broome good modern pub right next door. Next day we boarded the Gulflander... More

Hi Minny, Thanks for taking the time to write a review of the Savannahlander. We agree with you on Cobbold Gorge - it really is worth a visit and one of the nicest we've been to. Glad you enjoyed your stay at Undara. I spoke to a passenger who stayed there last week who had their bacon stolen by a... More

As i worked at Forsayth and Almaden in the sixties in steam days i was familiar with the line from Almaden to Forsayth i wanted tosee what remained of my time in the area . I only did the 4 day rail trip without the side trips and was surprised at the local knowledge of the 2 drivers on the... More

Hi Ken, Thanks for sharing your experience with us. I'm glad the cows in Almaden didn't interfere with having a good nights sleep! Our drivers are very well practised with coping with senior passengers but I'm sure they'll be pleased that you noticed! Thanks from the Savannahlander crew. More

Ok to go alone as you soon make friends. Not even a physical barrier between the passengers and driver(s). See the spectacular rainforest escarpment overlooking Cairns and the ocean beyond. Then suddenly you are over the top and entering the very different world of the inland savannah country. Pass through the Mareeba-Dimbulah Irrigation Area. I had no idea it was... More

Hi Bill, Thanks for the review. The video tip is a good one. Just make sure that you don't touch anything that looks like it could cause trouble! Thanks from the Savannahlander crew. More

I have travelled a bit and seen some amazing things in the world but who would of thought I could have so much fun on this four day trip inland from Cairns. The train is an old classic and very informal so we moved about and swapped seats and talked to the other passengers on the way. The staff were... More
