Visited both the West and East Macs. In the west would recommend lunch at Glen Helen Resort and a visit to Hermannsberg. In the east Trephina Gorge is beautiful and if you are lucky enough to be there when it isn't dry it must be incredible.

I fell in love with the West Macs coming in on the 4WD track from Kings Canyon. I like the way they are shaped like waves and the tops look like they are layers of rocks. The best way to see them is to rent a car and drive at dawn. I was on my way to Simpsons Gap and...

The Ranges to the west travel from near Alice Springs west for about 150kms and are spectacular. These iclude the favorites Simpsons Gap, Standley Chasm (see about midday to allow sunlight directly over chasm) Serpentine Gorge, Glen Helen Gorge and Redbank Gorge. All unique in their own way.
We had a lovely day trip today to the west macdonnell ranges. We started at Simpsons gap where there is a lovely waterhole in the Gap. A short drive later we drove to Stanley chasm, more fabulous scenery and a great shady lawn spot for lunch. On to Ellery creek big waterhole, followed by Ormiston gorge, both places where people...

Went to most of the Gaps located outside Alice Springs. I enjoyed taking pictures there. Take the time to take a short drive and see them. Very Very nice.
We did the tour with AA Kings who seem very efficient. It atarted early in the morning. Simpsons Gap was pretty and we saw rock wallabies and a number of wild birds. Standley Chasm was a pleasant woodland walk where we saw birds and a wild frog. We enjoyed the half day but some people would not think it worth...

Since it was a day trip we did five of the short hikes along the ranges. Weather was not extreme so the effort wasn't any where near arduous. During the short hikes you will see wildlife and notice the surrounds but only if you go at a quiet time.
Simpsons Gap is a beautiful spot to visit, although similar to much of the MacDonnell Ranges. A peaceful area with a nice waterhole.
Simpsons gap was a wonderful thing to see. The sweeping dry river bed when we visited was awesome. The short walk along the river to the gap which exposed a pool of clear water was great. This is close to Alice Springs only 12 km's out and well worth a visit.
