We joined the free one-hour highlights tour, and our volunteer guide took us around and told us the stories behind their pieces of art. We started in the aboriginal section. some of the art was a bit way out for our taste, but guess if way out is your thing you would enjoy it. Unable to see the value in blue poles though, to us was just a mess of colour which someone got paid heaps for. Something different to experience but would not go back again. The Portrait gallery... Visited on a Sunday and it was reasonably quiet and peaceful. Lots of different sorts of art to see and enjoy. Was easy to follow the map and go directly to areas of interest. The highlight was definitely the Monet and the Sydney Nolan collection. Friendly and helpful staff.

A large modern building on the edge of Lake Burley Griffin, the NGA is a must for any local or visitor to Canberra. The static and visiting exhibitions are world class, although the major international visiting exhibitions usually attract an additional cost for admission which is a shame. The Gallery has a very good coffee shop/restaurant in very bright surroundings... More

We joined a tour and looked at Sydney Nolan's paintings of Ned Kelly, they look good all together in a disiplay as you get the whole picture but I wouldn't want any single one on my wall, this is the right place for them. The aboriginal collections were really good and Loved the totem pole coffins on the ground floor... More
