The only way to see this is a docent led tour. Check for times. We went at 10am, on a Sat. When i heard it was a three hour tour, got scared. Not much of a hiker. No problem. The docents take you less than 1/4 mile at a time and then stop and tell you history. A lady went... More

Make time to take the tour. It lasts 3 hours (and you can't leave early), but it's totally worth it. You get terrific views, some history, and a healthy walk. Tours are scheduled for most days, but you have to show up at the appointed time. Check the website for times. More

This has to be one of my favorite drives in the United States. It's so beautiful on a sunny day that you have to stop frequently to take a photo and appreciate what you're seeing. Don't forget to bring your camera! The pictures we took here along Big Sur are my favorite from the entire vacation. More

Access to this amazing place is strictly controlled so take advantage of a volunteer-led tour. During the off season tours are offered only once a day, twice a week. No reservations accepted so get there early. We went on a Wednesday along with about 30 other folks. Beautifully restored, this place offers the most spectacular views to be had anywhere... More

The ranger tour was an interesting highlight of the history, geology, and technology of the lighthouse and life along the coast in the late 1800s. Tour was 3 hours, a bit long for the kids. Only one tour a day with limited entrance so you need to get to the locked gate 30 mins before your tour begins. More

Having lived on the east coast for most of my life, I have seen a lot of really cool lighthouses. The lighthouse itself was not among the top tier, but the location definitely was. This tour was well worth the time and $10 fee. We went on the 10AM tour on Christmas day. There were two tour guides- John and... More

Park on Hwy. 1 by the locked gate and wait for the tour guide to show up. He will have you follow his car to the parking lot at the base of the large hill. You will then walk along the one lane road up the side of the hill to the buildings, stopping along the way to listen to... More

We are so glad that we chose to visit Point Sur. You will get a mix of beautiful scenery and interesting history. After you drive in the gate and park at the bottom of the "island", you walk around a road to get to the lighthouse. Each view is breathtaking. If you are in Big Sur for the beauty, you... More

We had a great time on the Point Sur Lighthouse tour and highly recommend it! The huge rock rising out of the water with buildings on top captures your attention from Highway 1. We came down from Carmel and the drive took about 20 minutes. One thing to note is that the gate is closed and locked at the tour... More

Beautiful scenery. Need to plan this ahead of time, as it is a guide-only tour. Look at the website pointsur.org to get the tour times. It took about 3 hours, and there is a walk up the paved road to the top of the rock/lighthouse. It is nice to hear the history, and imagine families living up on the rock... More
