It is incredible to a Roman Ampitheater right in the middle of town. Thank you Lecce. We love you. It was so easy to visit this as is open air.

The Roman Amphitheatre is in remarkably good condition, probably because it was buried until fairly recently. It is right in the centre of the city in the main square and the 40% visible is almost intact although there was apparently another floor of which only small parts remain.
What was charming about this was how the city had adapted to the discovery of the amphitheater in the early 20th century. There's a museum, but we just sat on the piazza and watched the people pass. Lots of street vendors who appear out of nowhere with umbrellas when it starts to rain. Get a gelato and enjoy.
Right in the city centre main square, a nice place to sit and relax. In good condition but unfortunately you cannot enter the arena but only view from the street. Big.
Just imagine sitting down there together with twenty five thousand other people.A pity the whole was not uncovered
The amphitheater in the city center is not only a great architectural detail but serves still as a gathering spot for entertainment. It's a wonderful meeting spot and is a great place to hear some music or see a live performance.
When Lecce developers started adding buildings to the center of town, they discovered a well-preserved amphitheater buried for hundreds of years. Today, you can walk to the main square and look down at the amphitheater that is 40 percent uncovered... no tickets necessary.
We were actually supposed to get off at Bari to catch our ferry to Dubrovnik, but ended up missing the stop and found ourselves in Lecce with no trains back the other way. What a treasure of a town!
Much like many other reviewers, my girlfriend and I stumbled upon this little treasure while roaming the street of Lecce late...

I think the think with lecce is to get up early and enjoy it on your own, or even when the siesta is on 1-5.... wonderful town that is so manageble on foot or Bike. Enjoy
Not too much to get excited about ... and how gauche is that?? But Puglia is littered with Greek and Roman sites and this didn't do much for us.
