It was astonishing to hear how this monastery had been flattened in W W II and the rebuilt in its original form.We met an extremely friendly fellow African who looked after the souvenir shop. He was very informative and was a great help to our group. The cemetary for fallen soldiers is very moving. The many graves are laid out on... More

If you like history, this monastery was where the German's ambushed many Polish and American Soldiers. It is high on a mountain top in Cassino, Italy. I'm was not as enthralled in the monastery as I was overlooking the valley below. You could see the Polish cemetery with a huge white cross looking down from the monastery. There is a... More

Fascinating site with breathtaking views, A visit to the Polish War Cemetery is also a must as it is a reminder about the battles that took place here both during the Second World War and throughout history. It is a fortress monastery and has been fortified since Etruscan times as the wall immediately inside the abbey entrance reminds us. More

With my father having fought for NZ to claim the monastry it was brilliant to walk its rebuilt halls and marvel at the panoramic view the monks had over the approaches. The preservation and the fact a service is still held in the abbey makes it a living memory, thankfully in far better condition than when my father walked those... More

This abbey is not far from the Roma-Napoli Autostrada del Sole. Take the Cassino exit and follow the signs for Montecassino. What awaits you, after 4 or 5 miles of hairpin turns climbing the hill, is the great abbey founded by Saint Benedict. It is a must see if you are interested in excellent examples of amanuensis papers and books.... More

We visited the Monastery in Cassino and it was really lovely, well worth putting it on your itinerary. Especially if you have a guided tour. Danila Bracagila was an amazing guide of the Abbey as well as the Cassino area and its war history. More
