You can walk right up to the entrance of palace and all around the grounds. When I went, it was midwinter and very, very cold. I watched the guards march about, checked out the view and the statues - that was about it. The building is impressive and can be seen for quite some distance.

In the summer, there are guided tours inside the palace. I went the summer of 2011 and found it more interesting than expected. The interior was restored a few years ago, and it is really beautiful.
The tours are popular, so you should buy tickets before you come to Oslo.

The unassuming granduer of the architecture manages to somehow combine an informality with royal splendour. We were very fortunate tovisit during the State Opening of Parliament. The affinity between the people of Norway and there monarch was quite tangible and the informality of the Royal Palace endorsed this perfectly
