I saw my hosts photos of the black beach and snow on the mountains and it certainly was surreal! beautiful and different, although windy and freezing when I was there!

When we were there, it was deserted, but that's because the outside temperature was 45 F or about 7 C. The beach is wide, but the ocean looks fairly ferocious...not for swimming. The nearby cliffs and rock formations add up to spectacular scenery.

I have been to Greece and Hawaii, where black sand beaches are common, but this snowy experience was a bit different. The coastline in Iceland is unspoiled, with no hotels on the coast, just wide open coast and black sand. It was really beautiful. We loved also the troll rocks in the distance.

There is an easy 5 min walk from behind the N1 petrol station, which is a good stop anyway for a hot meal (they have a restaurant attached) or a hot dog and some snacks and a loo break! Walk out the back of the station / restaurant on the right hand side and down to the beach, stunning views!

Paid a quick visit to this beach and it was definitely worth the slight detour. Along with the impressive cliffs and caves we managed to see Puffins (which had left everywhere else on the island) on the cliffs and seals in the sea.
