The Northern lights are caused by the interaction of particles from the sun with the upper atmosphere near the North Pole. That creates this wonderful light effect, known as the Aurora Borealis. The locations visited are different every tour since we go where it’s most likely to see the Northern Lights each day. This tour is dependant on weather and sightings are not guaranteed. Refreshments not included. « less

Bearing in mind the transfer costs from the airport and back, then the cost of doing ANY of the tours, cut your losses and hire a car (especially if there are two or more of you). I used rentalcars.com and got a Hyundai 1.1 for a couple of days less than £50 – petrol is much cheaper than UK! Research... More

I can recommend gateway to iceland tours to see the northern lights in iceland. they only go out when good chance of seeing them and if you dont you get a free go next time they go out.Let me say the weather in iceland is very unpredictable and is your biggest enemy to see the lights. Also forget joanne lummley show... This was our final tour on Iceland and one that really left us a little bit fed up. We set off at 10pm from the BSI terminal, in convoy with seven full coaches of hopeful tourists, with realistically very little hope of seeing the Northern Lights due to the inclement weather conditions. The guide announced that we needed to move... More

We booked this trip with Gateway to Iceland tours (GTI) on their website for the first night we arrived in Reykjavik. We were only staying for a couple of nights so we figured go our first night, then if we didn't see them, we could go again. GTI offer the second night free of charge if you dont view them... More

We didn't expect any as it was very cloudy but they tried. Dress very warm. You would think this is obvious as its winter, windy and night. Yet people came with no hats, mitts, etc and you stand outside for hours. You can warm up in the bus but then risk the chance of missing anything. More

We went on a trip in search of the elusive Northern Lights with Johan of ICHighland tours who was assigned to run the tour by Iceland Guided Tours (IGTours). On our first try, we actually saw a faint glimpse of the Northern Lights while the bus was on its way out of Reykjavik city to pick up the other passengers.... More

We took a tour with Iceland Guided Tours (IGTours), which has the advantage of being a small minibus rather than a large coach. We were quite "fortunate" that the tour went ahead as apparently, the tours in the preceding & following days were cancelled due to the conditions. Our guide took us to 3 spots and eventually we saw what... More

Would've made our trip amazing if we had got to see them but not the tour company's (Iceland Excursions) fault. Tour guides were very knowledgeable and tried to keep us entertained (and awake). First night was fairly clear but no luck. Second night (free) got cancelled due to bad weather. Third night (free) was overcast the whole time but we... More

I thought I'd review this tour, even though we didn't do it, as there are far too many people on here moaning even though they DID see the lights! We were in Iceland for four nights in February, and none of the tours ran on any of the nights, as it was overcast the whole time. While it was disappointing,... More

Our motive for visiting Iceland was to see the Northern Lights. The weather was appalling, so we were surprised when the tour (Iceland Excursions) said it would run. As others have said, we were shipped to a bar for an hour, which we really could have done without. We would have been happy to leave an hour later which would... More

Dear FJT68, Thank you for your comments and review. The tour in search of the Northern Lights is scheduled to be a 3-5 hour tour giving ample time to view the lights when and if they appear at any given time. The tour is directed towards the best available area clear of clouds, this is usually 30+ minute drive from... More
