If you wish to spend more time at Meteora visiting at least 5 monasteries, the train from Athens to Kalambaka is comfortable, reliable and punctual. I tried to book train or KTEL bus tickets to no avail as their websites only work well in Greek language. Finally by luck I chanced upon "Astoria Travel" in my web search and from... More

The landscape itself is majestic here, but then to have these monasteries perched on top of these huge rocks is totally unique! Although about 20 were built, only about 6 of the monasteries remain. A few are easily accessible to the visitor. We were able to visit 2 while on our tour. First stop was the Varlamm Monastery (founded in... More

I cannot imagine any other place that is majestic in the same way as Meteora. The idea that someone would build not one but over 20 monasteries on top of these monoliths is hard to imagine. The materials for one of them took 22 years to gather. The location is awe inspiring and the history is rich in all aspects.... More

Meteora was amazing. I attended a tour which was well worth it to give you all the background and point out subtle and special things. The monasteries were beautiful and the geology and scenery is world class. A bit of a jaunt from Athens, but well worth the trip. More

If you are planning a trip to Greece and you would like to do something else except lying on the beach and swimming - if you going to the island, forget it - you simply must go and see Meteora. This place is 4 hours trip by train from Athens. Of course it is better to go there in spring... More

The monasteries are as said awe inspiring and well worth a visit. The trip is about 5 hours from Athens by car--there are tours but the car gives you choices such as which monasteries to visit and where you want to stop to get the right photo. We spent two nights at Dellas Hotel (excellent) and ate a dinner at... More

A few huge rocks. That's all it is but the experience of standing in front of them, the wind blowing past you, is priceless. More

Forget about the Acropolis and the Parthenon… if you see one sight in Greece it must be the monasteries of Meteora! Allocate at least two days to these six world wonders, which to me, is much more astounding that that pile of rubble in Athens that they’ve been trying to put together again for the past how many decades. The... More

Tips I wish I knew. A lot of walking but not strenuous, 2 euro enterance fee to each monastery, woman must wear a floor length skirt or use the wraps that are provided, no pictures inside monasteries, bring money because they have gift shops, map out which ones you want to go so you don't back track, and bring water.... Just to observe those enormous rock formations is breathtaking. If you add the fact that the monasteries were built on top of them, the result is simply amazing. Definitely not to be missed. We could not catch the sunset as it was cloudy. But do not miss the chance to do so because is it said to be one of... More
