Came here on a walk (from the book Crete Walks in the Apokoronas by Geoff Needle). The views are tremendous, the wild flowers and butterflies (in April) were delightful. We were pleasantly surprised by the large number of Greek and Roman ruins at the site and spent a very enjoyable hour wandering around.

Ancient history in Chania area.Archological digging not present as in previous years visit. No longer funded by EU grant i believe. Small museum onsite with explanations of ruins. Can pick up info guides at tourist office too. Nice to wonder around(hat and waterSummer months) Beautiful views in the area particularly near old Turkish Fortress.

It is a "must" to get the right impression of the importency of the island. All the differnt conquers from ancient time uptil now. The wiev is amazing, the very long and deep fiord. Use your fantasy and "wiev the boats, ships sailing toward the coast".

Fantastic site for the amateur historian. Ruins span well over two thousand years from ancient Cretans to a WWll machine gun nest. The Roman water cisterns are amazing. All for free! Even if you are not interested in history the view from the castle over Souda Bay is fantastic.

If you are interested in archeological sites, Aptera is a must. mostly roman remains built over an ancient Hellenic city. A lot to see including the remains of an amphitheatre. A great taverna in the village below too.

This site is not yet completely discovered - archeologues are still busy at this place. Beatifull theatre discoverd only a few years ago.

High on a hill just outside Chania overlooking the bay of Souda. You always wonder how these huge buildings could be created. Fabulous views all around.

We spent a grand total of 15 minutes inside the gates of Aptera. They close at 3:00, so it was very rushed. What we did see was absolutely amazing. It appears that they are still excavating the site.
