Emperor Hadrian (76-138 BC), the greatest ancient philhellene, built this temple to spite Theseus as the founder of the city of Athens. For the very discerning and Greek-literate tourist, on the side of Hadrian's Arch facing the temple there are still traces of Hadrian's exclamation: "This is the city of Hadrian, not Theseus." A grand stement but true, since he... More

We had gone past this on the Open Top Bus Tour and it sparked our interest/ It was within walking distance of our hotel and we went there on our last day in Athens. We had to queue to get in but this didnt take long. The entry fee was only 2Euros- I couldn't help thinking that if there was... More

While your visit to the Athens area will surely include the Parthenon and Acropolis, a stop by the Temple of Zeus is worth your while. It is nice to see comparative lines and columns in a smaller construction, and think about the history behind it as well.

This this the Temple of Olympian Zeus, not Olymbian -- some terribly confused and un-historical neo-Greek spelling: Trip Advisor should withdraw such illiterate presentations. It is also known in short as the Olympieion, NOT THE OLYMBION, (just because some Greeks pronounce it that way...) At times Greeks should be grateful that the rest of the west has preserved a steady... More

It was once the greatest temple of the ancient warld. It took some 600 years to be completed. The emperor Adrianos of the Roman Empire paid for the Temple to be finished. A couple hundred years after it was comleted it was pillaged by the Barbarians and eventually it was reduced to ruins that we see today. The Athenians as... More

Temple of Olympian Zeus is away from the Acropolis site. The entrance ticket for Temple of Olympian Zeus is included in the Acropolis admission ticket. Your Acropolis ticket is valid for four days as long as you visit any of the site once. Tip 1: Entrance ticket is 12 euro that includes a few different spots, Parthenon, Athena temple, Temple... This was walking distance from our hotel and we visited on our last day in Athens, spending over an hour there. The centrepiece is the amazing temple with its impressive thirteen remaining columns, which are much larger than you think when you get close up to them! Around the perimeter of the site there are the remains of other smaller... More

I was a little disappointed by this attraction, with a name like "Temple of Olympian Zeus" I guess I expected more instead of a bunch of pillars. However, it was on the way to several other main sights and cost me nothing to take a bunch of pics from outside the fence. I'm not a history expert so I don't... More

There is always the tendency to become overloaded with Greek pillars and temples, so it's advisable to visit sites in an interspersed manner - and this one is worth the effort.

While this portion is of great historic value, and very interesting to see, it's main appeal - to me, anyway - was the huge size that this structure represents. You certianly want to see this since it's quite close to everything else "ancient" in Athens.
