The call it a cathedral, because there is situated the bishop's see. In reality it is an even not very large church where everything shows bmore expensive than it really was. Still the handcraftship is from a high quality, as it it should for merchants who wanted value for their money.

This is an interesting cathedral with some beautiful features but has nothing to make it stand out as particularly special. It is a fine example of a 15th century church and is worth a visit. Right in the historic city center, you can find the Cathedral of Funchal. It's a beautiful building, however there are other things much more interesting to do and see.

The church itself is very beautiful. They were busy doing restoration work when we were there. We attended mass on the 2 Sundays we were in Funchal and found the church to be extremely hot inside (so take a fan if attending mass) and the old ladies more interested in catching up with the weeks news than listening to the...
