Unfortunately, I had high hopes for this museum, so it was my own fault for being disappointed. I guess i should have guessed when I got there and it was empty! I thought it wasnt too hard to find, unlike other reviews...I saw it on the way to Belem on the train/bus. The collection was displayed in rooms with walls... More

I really enjoy this museum. The space is nice, the collection excellent and probably one of the best places to understand the relationships between East and West. Getting there might not be easy since it is not pedestrian friendly but Alcantara Mar train station is just next to it and the bus 12 stops at the door. Free from 18h... More

Others have commented on how out of the way the Museu do Oriente is. They are not exaggerating. The location is not pedestrian-friendly. What they may be exaggerating is how interesting this museum is. The temporary show of Asian toys was of mild interest at most. The permanent collection is not much better. It is located on floors that are... More

This museum is worth the visit: it shows and tells the story of the Portuguese colonies and settlements in Asia, and the exhibitions are very comprehensive, but it never gets too much. You can see artefacts, paintings, jewelry, fans etc. etc. from India, Burma, China and many other countries. Everything from historic events till everyday life (food, religion etc.) is... More

To reach the museum you have to cross the railway - this is best done a couple of hundred yards on the Lisbon side of the museum, next to the bridges. It seems strangely situated, a little difficult to get to, but well worth the effort. The place is not on the main tourist list, and was virtually empty. It... More
