Set in spectacular grounds this Museum is simply great. The collection is full of beautiful pieces from Greece, Islam and Persia, China and Europe. Obviously his taste was "conservative" (esp the paintings which do not include Immpressionists or Post-Impressionists) but there is a great Turner. The exhibitions are well-lit and titled in English. The cafe is very good, the bookshop...

Reasonably priced museum with some interesting pieces. Worth a visit.

Easy access from the subway (don't go into the modern art museum by mistake like I did). Pieces are exquisite and representative of all eras from ancient Egypt and Rome thru the 1950's.

At Sundays the entrance is free. What I like the most is the Lalique collection. This museum has an enormeous Garden and lake, a Good Cafeteria for a tea and a nice museum shop. In the summer, they have jazz concerts at night. really nice

An ugly building, very much of its time but a treasure house of wonderful things. I had no previous knowledge of this museum but name almost any type of treasure and it's here. A whole room of Lalique! Egyptian treasures. Gainsborough, Renoir, Turner. Chinese jade and porcelain, Rodin sculptures, illuminated manuscripts, all beautifully displayed in galleries designed to house them....

First off...this is not the Louvre, Prado or Hermitage. It is the private collection that one individual amassed throughout his lifetime. When you look at it from that point of view, it is truly amazing. The museum was only a 5 minute walk from our hotel and we went the morning we were leaving Lisbon. We did not know that...
