We witnessed a tranquil sight with a charming legend about the blue and green lakes sitting side by side in the craters. We were able to see lush countryside getting to the Crater Lakes. Indeed, it was foggy when our cruise ship docked, but it had lifted before we arrived at the lakes.
The view from the top of the crater is awesome. We were lucky wth our tour guide, Gary, that he drove around the top of the rim to give us multiple views down to the valley and the twin lakes.
We were very disappointed when our cruise ship stopped in Ponta Delgada and our arranged excursion was during a very dense fog. WE saw nothing ! Be aware that this region experiences dense fog and you might waste your money as we did. I am sure this is a beautiful place but we didn't see anything but grey fog out...

Second best views on the island (after Lagoa do Fogo). A stop on Visto do Rei should be on everyone's itinerary visiting the island. We walked around the whole lake, combining two walks which took us around 5 hours (c. 25km). Definitely worth it for the views. Just be prepared for the changing weather conditions
We had a layover in Sao Miguel on our trip to Faial. We wanted to see as much as possible in a short period of time, so we hired a cab driver to be our tour guide. We knew enough words in Portuguese (and he knew enough words in English) that he was able to understand our request and drive...

I went there in April 2013. It is one of the most beautiful hiking trail I have ever been. It is 12 kms long, finishes in Sete Cidades village. Amazing view down to the lakes.
The drive up to the Caldeira is gorgeous. Once you are up there, it is a peaceful place. The day we visited, there was a woman with a stand selling corn husk crafts. I bought an adorable corn husk flower for my hair.
