I've been blessed to be in Antwerp several times and I enjoy taking people here. Museums are free on fourth Wednesdays. My favorite part of this house is the proverbs painting. Ask and they will give you a list. There are over 100 proverbs shown in the painting, many of which you will recognize. More

A good insight into the mind of an avid art collector and expert at the end of the 19th century. More

Mayer van den Bergh was a wealthy art collector who devoted his short life to traveling around Europe and purchasing exquisite works of art from various countries and from different eras. When he passed away at 41, his mother converted this building into a museum to house his entire collection. There is a variety of works to see: Baroque paintings,... More

This place is probably more telling about Antwerp's past than some of the other more typical tourist trail locations. In my book there is this trinity of Rubenshuis, Plantyn and Mayer vd Bergh. More

My main thrill with this collection was the Breughal paintings. Images I know but didn't think I would see. The Breughal father and son (wasn't familiar with the work of the other Breughal brother - Jan - are two of my favourite painters. More

The former private collection of Fritz Mayer Van den Bergh is housed in a early 20th-century replica of a Renaissance patrician home near the old Bourla theatre, built by his mother after he died accidentally in 1901. It is small but rich and comprises the famous "Dulle Griet" (Mad Margaret), an allegory of war by Pieter Brueghel the Elder, which... More

This museum, in the former house of Mr and Mrs Mayer van den Bergh, is not a real eyecatcher amongst the Antwerp museums, at least from the outside. Inside, however, you'll find one of the best collections of early Flemish Primitives and renaissance paintings in the Netherlands. The "Dulle Griet" alone is worth the visit. And if the paintings aren't... More
