The Portuguese Synagogue is worth a visit, if you are interested in the historical and cultural developments of the Portuguese in the Netherlands. There is much to learn and absorb, depending on the level of your interest. Our interest is mainly historical, as this ssynagogue is part of the "Jewish quarter" in Amsterdam. This synagogue is located just a few... More

Take your time visiting and get the feeling of the building. The interior (don't miss te womens galery) as well as the outside are impressive. The treasures in one of the smaller buildings on te side should not be mised either. More

While quite a plain interior, the cavernous dimensions of the interior definitely merit a look on grounds of historical significance, and also as a reminder of what the pre-WW2 Jewish community in Amsterdam had the resources to build. The size of the thing is what really sets it apart from, for example, those of the Venice ghetto, or Ben Ezra... More

This vast 17th centure Synagoge (it sat 900 people when Israels Prime Minister came to visit in january 2012) has just been lovingly restored. Its treasures, including priceless cloths, are sure worth a visit. More

The Portuguese Synagogue, even while being "improved", is still a beautiful place. I recommend the audio tour as it provides more substantial information about the different aspects of the synagogue and provides beautiful music, too. More

This text (in Hebrew, of course) has been above the entrance to the Portuguese Synagogue since 1672 (yes, 1672, that is not a typo). The building itself is beautiful, and an oddity in that most all of the other Synagogues in The Netherlands were destroyed by the Nazis, this one was not, and it is a mystery as to why... More

While this synagogue is an important part of Amsterdam history, we felt the potential to tell its history and significance was being missed. There is a security door that you have to ring to gain admission. The entrance is not well marked. Once you pay your admission, you are allowed to enter the sanctuary of the beautiful building. Inside, one... More

My husband and I had never been in a synagogue before and found this to be a great new experience. There is a security door that you have to ring through for admission to the gift-shop and ticketing. Then there is courtyard that leads to the synague. Inside it is lovely and quiet... not crowded and touristy like everywhere else... More
