The library is indeed beautifully done. However, you can't take photos inside, which make remembering all the details hard. It is definitely worthwhile for a visit if you happen to be in the city. However, it won't take that long to finish it. More

The Library offers a stunning example of fine late Baroque design. Gorgeous ceiling, ornate book cases and inlaid floor. Huge windows all around illuminate the beautiful features of this room. Unfortunately, we missed getting a tour so as English-speakers, we probably missed quite a bit of the history. As with so many, amazing museums in Switzerland, admission was free with... More

describe it in one word: breathtaking! the knowledge of 10 centuries, and some of these 1'000 years old books are presented open for everybody's eyes. the room is small but amazing - take your time to discover and get a glimpse on how precious books once were. if you are German speaking, a guided tour at 2 pm is of... The Abbey Library is well worth a visit even for those not into books. Containing manuscripts dating as far back as the 8th Century, some of which are open for reading (if you can read the handwriting!), this is an attraction that is missed by many, but should be on the "must-see" list of everyone visiting Switzerland. To get the... More

When you arrive in St Gallen you see the cathedral, which is worth going round in its own right. The frescos painted on the ceiling rival any in Rome. Park in the underground car park you will see signed up. Behind the cathedral is the old monastery which houses the Stiftsbibliothek which used to be the Abbey library. You need to... More

Don't miss this if you are in St. Gallen. It is quite a spectacular little room. I am giving this 4 stars instead of 5 because they don't allow photography, and also because I've seen Stift Melk in Melk, Austria, which is bigger and more magnificent (Stift Melk allow photographs to be taken). More

This delightful piece of history is so well maintained it should be around for another 800 years. It is ornate and fascinating with a few things you wouldn't expect in a library (like a mummy). Everyone is required to put cloth booties (provided by the museum) over their street shoes to minimize damage to the floors. Only a specified number... More
