Obviously a must see when visiting Assisi, however be careful with the timing of your visit to the Basilica as it can be spoilt if you choose a time when it is vastly over crowded. Weekends and service times are therefore best avoided if possible.

Assisi is a beautiful hill town which we found unexpectedly charming. There are many churches (of course) and lots of atmospheric alleys and stairs with phenominal views. The Basilica, for us, was a let down. Very crowded. Full of tour groups. Maybe because we aren't Catholic we didn't "get" the site? Visit the smaller churches (like San Stefano) in addition!

The frescoes in the upper basilica are colourful and beautiful. Bring binoculars to get a good look. Don't miss out on experiencing a religious office in the lower chapel. The chapel itself is beautiful, and St Francis' tomb in the crypt is quite special. Hearing the monks and nuns singing above is very moving. The first office is at 7AM

It is really hard to move from looking at the countryside views but going inside is another world. For having gone thru what it has, it is in amazing shape. The effort put in to build and maintain this site is tremendous.
