I was very eager to see La Foce because I had read the former owner's account of the effects of WW II in the region when La Foce was used as an orphanage and commandeered as a residence by the Nazi. I had also read Iris Origo's biography and was thrilled when I found out her home, La Foce was... More

This is a magnificent garden with a rich history. It was still early in the season, but the wisteria was in full bloom and the hills around the area are covered in wildflowers. If you are in the area on one of the days they are open - I recommend the tour. The woman that gave our tour was wonderful.... More

Only wish was in full bloom. Has to be one of the prettiest places in the world. Only wish our tour would have been longer!

Multiple trips! The perfect place to view heaven. A place where every aspect of the visit was greater than the narratives and photos exhibited-----------how many places are much much better than he descriptions. Stay for weeks; visit the numerours towns in a valley designated by UNESCO for natural and cultural purity. How much better can you get. We go every... More

If you have read Iris Origo's books, you must come here to appreciate Tuscany and Val D'Orcia. It is so out of the way that you don't find many tourists. The countryside is just magical. Slow down and inhale it in.

Good news for day visitors. After being closed for most of 2011, the restaurant/bar at La Foce reopened in early 2012 completely refurbished and under new management. It is spacious and elegant with an attractive menu of Tuscan specialities and a good wine list. A pleasant place also for a mid-morning coffee break. Staff courteous and friendly. Ample free parking.... More

After a few false starts, and wrong turns we managed to get to La Foce at about 2 minutes to three......three was the starting time for our tour! There turned out to be about 30 of us on the tour, it was very hot and the guide was as careful as possible to keep us in the shady areas. This... More

My daughter and I stayed at the castle and it was magnificent. A perfect place to be to tour nearby towns and villages. The staff is incredible and the food is wonderful. Don't leave without bringing home their extra virgin olive oil. A must see in Tuscany...and a definite must stay.

La Foce is a large estate located on the east flank of the Val d'Orcia, on land that is alternately field and forest. It was originally an agricultural estate consisting of 57 smaller farms under the mezzadria (share-cropping) system which prevailed for centuries until after World War II when it all fell apart due to post-war industrialization and other factors.... Visit the gardens of La Foce where the family will welcome you. This historic property is the estate of the family of Iris Origo who with her husband, renovated a derilict ancient property with villa and many farm houses where workers lived in abject poverty. She not only saved the estate, but established a cooperative farme and a school for... More
