The buildings are beautiful, the frescos incredible, the library fantastic and the pharmacy fantastic at the Abbazia di Monte Oliveto Maggiore. The Abbey is located in the middle of a small forest and seems away from it all and to have a contemplative air about it. Signs ask visitors to be silent. I loved seeing the library and the hand... It's pointless to repeat most of the rave reviews of this beautiful monastery. Just one thing: entry is free, but do put 1 euro into the little machine in the church to switch on the lights in the choir stalls. The 16th century marquetry is absolutely amazing. To the non-ravers (and there are a few) I'd say go out of... More

Beautiful grounds and buildings. Tasted the wine, it was excellent and David, the person in charge of tastings, was very engaging. The walk back to the parking lot is uphill!

My first visit to a Monastery in Italy and this was a nice experience. It was a cold spring day at Easter but still appeared welcoming. Absolute highlight was the frescos displayed around all four sides of the covered Cloister - well worth the visit just for that. Don't forget to visit the winery underneath for free tastings of Wine,... More

I just visited the Abbey on a late winter afternoon before the sunset. The abbey was towering the valley with a pink colour while the sky was turning red. After visiting the Chiostro with the beautiful frescoes... we enter the small stairs and visited the PRESEPE.See the foto of the Grotta della natività. Exitigìng we stopped at the farmacia and... The scenery along the drive to visit this beautiful Benedictine abbey makes the journey as enjoyable as the arrival. The setting is a cypress forest and just the walk from the parking lot serves to transport you back in time. The abbey is celebrated for its marvelous painted fresco cycle of the life of Saint Benedict. This cycle is particularly... More

Tucked away in the Tuscan countryside, this abbey is worth the drive. Plus, the landscape in this area is so stunningly beautiful the trip there is half the fun. , with amazing historic frescos encircling the main cloister and a fairy-tale beautiful library on the upper floor. The church interior boasts beautiful wood-inlay choir stalls, and the abbey still has... More

We went one Sunday morning to see the Benedictine monks have their 11 AM service in part because we wanted to hear their Gregorian chants. The service was quite interesting even for non-Catholics, and we could follow along with the program even though it was in Italian. The real treat was the 36 frescoes on the life of St. Benedict... Set in stunning scenery, this abbey is a "must see". The building itself is impressive, but the frescoes in the great cloister are stunning! It is a collection of pictures of the life of St Benedict - brilliant! The lectern is quite famous too, but don't miss going to the library where there are thousands of ancient books, but also...
