Best to go early in the day before the cruise ships arrive. Wonderful shops & restaurants. Explore the streets off the main avenue which go down to Giardino Pubblico as they're much quieter and full of lovely shops and restaurants.

Corso Umberto is the most beautiful street, however when it is crowded with 3,000 people from a huge cruise liner it has trouble coping. At night, it is at its best, with bars & restaurants spilling onto it, all with people having fun.
The shops are great and the streets are full of life. Great people watching at any side walk cafe with a glass of wine. Loved the little side streets with the bougainvillea and the little churches open all the time. I highly recommend.
Liked all the shops and little side roads, disliked stupid car drivers trying to get by in very crowded street.

This pedestrian artery is filled daily with busloads of Italian visitors, cameras and wallets at the ready at the Southern archway entrance who flow down to the exit arch to rejoin their coach, Every corner is photogenic, with squares to view Mt Etna, and the azure Ionian Sea 700 ft below.
This main drag is not to be missed. It's fun to discover the small shops, restaurants and art. Don't be afraid to get lost in the side streets and wonder away from all the tourist. We were glad we did and found a great place for lunch. Be prepared for the crowds, we went in early May, and it was...

Lots of stores and beautiful people going around. Shop keepers are attentive and friendly. Churches and piazzas across the way, with a panoramic view point.
Loved the shops and gelato, to die for. Very crowded during the day with group tours, but in late afternoon you can move and enjoy walking without being pushed aound.
