But the square has long been a lure for massive numbers of pigeons, drawn by the massive numbers of tourists who readily feed them. While the tourists happily post for photos amid the flock, there are concerns that the birds' presence--and what they leave behind--will damage the centuries old architecture and art work. « less

It is a must do, just for the experience. Crowds are massive till the evening and lots of people trying to get your money. It is all just part of the show, but worth it. More

I actually felt disappointed when I visited St Mark's Square, honestly I felt there was something missing. We didn't visit the shops as that is not what our vacation was about but we met people who told us of the 'expense' of visiting these restaurants, coffee shops etc... in the square, another tourist trap:( Would not recommend this visit, sorry. You have to go there because it is one of THE places to visit when in Venice. The architecture is wonderful but it is especially lovely if you go when most have the crowds have gone partly because you can see more and partly because you don't have to push your way through the crowds to see anything. At night... More

This is an amazing "square". St. Mark's Basilica and the Doge's Palace are located within its confines, as well as beautiful stores and a currency exchange. In the evening, there is live classical music; but, bring a chair or blanket as the seating arrangements are for paying customers of the cafes only. More

San Marco Piazza is anything but a hidden gem, but it is absolutely the kind of place that continues to draw people to want to travel. It is a beautiful panorama of sights, sounds, aromas and culture. Lining the waterway is some of the best people watching you'll encounter anywhere, with people from every culture around the world, street artists,... More

The square was over crowded and it is apparent that every effort is made to grossly overcharge visitors More
