It was nice and a contrast with the sophisticated Cita Bass - but the Cita Alta is very much like dozens (scores?) of attractive old towns. More

Bergamo is, effectively, two cities: Citta Alta (old historical center) and Citta Bassa. Citta Alta is a visually stunning and beautiful area, very hilly, with grand old villas and palazzos and terraced lands used for agriculture. Piazza Vecchia is a very beautiful central square. There is fantastic history around every corner and wonderful views on all sides. Get the lift up the Campanone bell tower - but beware the bells as they are VERY loud - best go at 1 pm rather than 12 ! More

Great to wander around in the day. Beautiful for restaurants at night. It can can busy with tourists and locals. If you like a restaurant, book a table for the evening. Most have cover charges but only around 2 to 3 euros. Try the local ravioli at ornellos. Its quite easy to walk up and down rather than take the... More

It's great small typical italian town with picturesque views, cobbled streets, old churches, stone fortifications and so on. Maybe better than Milano itself. Here you are almost alone not in people behive. More

We did a walking tour of the Upper City. It was great to understand the significance of the Upper City. We had a great day in Bergamo, but after you see the Upper City, you've done it all. More

Everyone goes to Milano or the lakes, but Bergamo is well worth the detour. The Upper City is the medieval heart of this lovely city and you'll easily spend the day strolling through its charming streets. More
