The exterior is very ornate but the ceiling inside has to be seen to be believed - you don't need stained glass when the decoration is so incredible

The Cathedral is magnificent, both outside and inside. But there is a very special place to see there - the tomb of the great maestro Gaetano Donizetti, who was born in Bergamo, lived there and was buried there. There is a beautiful funerary monument to the most distinguished citizen of Bergamo

Just from outside the Basilica looks amazing but when you enter it literalely takes you the breath. The cealing is covered with 3d sculptures and covered in gold. It really has this WOW effect. What can you say--this is a gem. There is so much history and beauty in this single building from the red marble lions outside with hundreds of years of hands touching them so they are almost polished to the stunning marquetry panels inside in front of the alter. Don't miss this one but remember it is closed to the public...

I saw the pink lions in Parma and these were much better! These lions have babies and there is still detail to these. Both the basilica and cappelle are full of great details. Don't miss the little statues on the gates, they are amazing also.This section of Bergamo has so many beautiful things so close together it is almost overwhelming!
