One of the few truly gothic churches in Italy, with light and airy interior and a splendid sculptural marble altar.

TA reviews seem to love the Basilica di Santo Stefano; I was less excited about it because of the lack of signage and little to see. Upon walking in you can’t enter the upstairs portion of the church and the lower portion is for reflection and pray only. After making a donation by the watchful Priest you enter another church... As with most travellers, we fell for the charm and peaceful surroundings. A lovely place to have a drink and pastry and gaze at the architecture. I had no problem, but my husband could never get comfortable with his chair balanced on the pebble flooring of the Piazza - it was quite amusing for me to watch though!

we went there and we didn't realize we missed the spot because it's really nothing there, only a long corridor, and when we went there on sunday there's an antique market, really nice

A wonderful complex of 7 churches, or chapels, or whatever each is. A great layered historical experience, from the 8th through the 17th centuries. This kind of thing is why Italy is unbeatable for those interested in history. One minute you feel like in you are in Ravenna at St. Vitale, a few steps later, it looks oh so Tuscan.

OK, the basilica with its four churches is really worth visiting but the little square itself is the most perfect place in Bolgna to have a drink. Very special atmosphere in gorgeous surroundings, i.e. some of the most beautiful Palazzi in Bologna.

Seven churches into one. Unique. Crossing a nice arcade with nice little shops end up in front of the church. Make sure to check the hours they are open, it closes at noon for a few hours.

If you visit Bologna don’t miss this one! Though it has a single name, in fact three very old and charming churches are covered. Especially the octogonal San Sepolcro is impressive. The even older S. Vitale was closed for restoration. But the courtyard and the cloister are extremely well preserved and intimate. The square in front of the compex is... More
