The ruins of Emperor Hadrian's villa, 30 minutes from Rome, takes one's breath away. The location against the hillside is perfect, the architecture is wonderful, and one can get a good sens of the beauty of this place, before it was plundered. Take the trip!
If you like Roman remains, this place is perfect. It is a huge complex of buildings and baths, the size of a small town, many of which are still standing. You can really get a sense of what it was like in ancient times. Also, the number of tourists that comes here is mercifully low, in comparison to other attractions...

We choose to spend half of a day of our short stay in Rome and visit Hadrian's Villa near Tivoli. It is almost an hour long bus drive from Cotral station in Rome in one direction, and a nice potion of walking to get to the ruins. Although you can catch a bus from the village but we chose to...

Visited this on 20th. April 2013 by coach from Rome in conjunction with a visit to vill d'Este. A magnificent place to visit, well worth the money. Coach travel is probably the easiest way to visit if you are prepared to wait for fellow party members to do not turn up at the rendezvous points at the advised times.
We choose a Monday, as Villa d'Este is closed, to visit Adriano's villa. If you were expecting a Fori Imperiale set of ruins you will be surprised by the extent of the remains. It does not take too much imagination as you wander the 200+ acres to see what a sumptuous complex this was in it's day. Definitely worth investing...

The biggest ancient site I have visited outside Pompei and wonderfully at atmospheric. Well worth the 45 minute drive from Rome. Get the audio tour as it will mean much less without it and take water - there is nothing inside the site. Stunning!
We booked a tour without knowing about the place. I believe any hotel tours will be ok which includes the Villa and the Tivoli gardens (2 separate places).
It is a long walking day but worth the visit. Must bring suntan or hat. All outdoors.
I do not suggest going by yourself. Tour is the easiest way. Not recommended for...
