Herculaneum is definitely worth seeing if you have time for both this site and Pompeii. Though it was very interesting and the mosaics and artwork are stunning, I wouldn't count it as a replacement for Pompeii, as many guidebooks suggest if you have limited time, as the scale of Pompeii makes it a much more interesting and awe inspiring visit... We visited Herculaneum as part of an organised guided tour from Sorrento. The journey takes just over an hour by coach. The town of Herculaneum is within the modern town of Erculano within the urban sprawl of the Naples area. In fact it is reckoned that much of the ancient town is under Ercolano and yet to be uncovered. The... More

This site is small, but has many intact frescoes and tile Mosaics, more than Pompeii. Can be viewed in much shorter time with considerably less crowd to deal with. I would recommend a visit. We did it in the rain and had little competition. Use the Regional Tourist card since admission can be free and the train as well. huge... More

Herculaneum is a far smaller site, less daunting perhaps and somehow easier to imagine as a living town. worth a visit.

before heading to Herculaneum and Pompeii, I did a fair bit of research and came to the conclusion that I should do Herculaneum as a priority due to the reports that the site was well preserved compared to Pompeii. Luckily I had time as an independent traveller to do both. Herculaneum was small and had a few key areas of... More

Our base was Naples. This was about a 20 minute train ride from the Circumvesuviana Train Station Porta Nolana. The tickets were 2.10 euro for each of us. When you get to Ercolano its not more then a 15 minute walk to the main entrance. The ticket to enter was either 11 euro for 1 site or 20 euro for... More

A trip to Herculaneum is a very moving experience. It's not hard to visualize bustling streets and intimate family scenes in elegant homes when everything was paralyzed by the eruption of Vesuvius which looms large over the remains. A good personal guide is a must since there's virtually no interpretive signage and the audio tour seems to be mostly music.... More

much smaller but better preserved than Pompeii. definitely worth a visit. we visited Pompeii first and then Herculaneum and I would recommend this way round. Pompeii gives you are great overall understanding and then Herculaneum allows you to focus in on some details. I think Pompeii may be a bit disappointing if seen second.

Pompeii is a great site, but the details (woodwork, tiles, building reconstructions) in the much smaller Herculaneum were wonderful.

Little Pompei, without the crowds. You really get the feeling and you don't need the entire day. Enjoy walking around the streets and seeing the town.
