Well worth the bus trip (from Pompeii) up the steep, narrow, twisty road past a range of houses, derelict graffitied buidlings, radio masts and curious sculptures.
There's a 20-30 minute walk up a moderately steep path with a loose surface to get to the crater - worth taking some sensible shoes. Some young lads hand out carved, wooden walking sticks...

Despite what our hostel staff told us, you can get a ride up Vesuvius on a Sunday. An easy walk to the top lets you walk around the crater and on a clear day, you can see all the way to the island of Capri and across Naples.

There is a 'Vesuvius bus' and a 4x4 type of access run by a different company. The latter, I think, is the more expensive option but the walk is shorter, whilst the former tends to get clogged up with lots of school parties.

Drive or take the bus to the parking lot. There is a fee to climb to the top. It takes about 20-30 minutes, depending on your physical condition. The trail is not paved. The views from the top are stupendous on clear days.
