Visiting Matera is a unique experience: the caves and old tuff houses of the Sassi create a landscape almost unique in the world, and an incredible atmosphere: I've experienced something similar only in Kappadokia. Be prepared to walk a lot, to climb and descend but be surte you'll be fascinated by the visit. More

From Matera we drove around to the other side of the ravine and the Parco Archeologico Storico Naturale della Murgia e delle Chiese Rupestri del Materano (Murgia & Matera rock churches natural history & archaeological park), where there are over 150 churches carved into the soft rock and the sweeping view back to Matera puts the sassi into context. Walking around Matera you simply cannot understand what it was like inside the sassi. Getting inside is important. To be inside a church that is actually a cave, complete with frescoes and with views of the intricate system of collecting and distributing water that is everywhere is truly necessary to understand this city. A Unesco World Heritage site. Very, very old and just fascinating. Homes and churches built into caves and cliffs. Wander through here and you will feel like you have entered another century. More

if you happen to be in Matera and look across the ravine, you might wonder how to get there and what to do. Well, prepare for a wonderful experience, visiting cave churches, shepherd dwellings, walking the edges of the ravine. Go along with one of the guides form the natural park and enjoy your lunch afterwards in the Jazzo. I've... More

The Sassi is an extraordinary place. This was my third visit. It is hard to believe that people inhabited these rock caves from prehistoric times through 1952 when it was declared a world heritage site by UNESCO. In addition to the historic churches, one of the exhibits worthwhile visiting is a model of what a typical cave dwelling looked like... More
