You can only see the convent through a guided tour, offerered several times during the day, we are really glad we booked it and came back to take it. The convent architecture and pieces of art are so well preserved that it is understandable why they have small tours of no more than 20 people at a time. The highlight... More

Our hostess at the B&B recommended this tour. What an amazing history this monastery has! The building itself is very old and the painting are great -- don't miss the Rafael painting of Christ More

This convent offers tours as other reviewers say in both English and Spanish - you queue from 9.30am - they open at 10am to sell tickets- Spanish tours first - Ask if there is an English tour that day {they do not sell next day tickets} if they have a guide they will sell you the ticket with the time... Visit is by Spanish language tour only, unless you are lucky enough to pick up an English one which will only be scheduled if they happen to have enough requests on that day. We couldn't work out how one could possibly plan this in advance so risked the Spanish - which was also the only one not already full that... More

I loved this museum. Yes it does take a little work to get tickets and they DO have several tours in English. It has very unique treasures and art. I highly recommend it and I am not a religious person. More

Beautiful 16th century architecture and a lot of moving marterpices like La Dolorosa Virgin and Maria Magdalena statues. This is the convent of the sisters of Felipe II and other royals. To make the most of your time you need to know as much as you can about the founders of the convent, The Habsburgs. More

A place full of mistery and art works. Grossly underrated almost certainly because of the odd procedures to visit it, but worth the waiting. We arrived around midday and were told that guided tours (Spanish only) take place at set times and last 45 minutes. We had an evening flight but having been there on the Monday only to find... More

The majority of the tours are in Spanish, so the few English tours available book up very quickly. My husband speaks fluent Spanish and I bought the guidebook in the giftshop before our tour, so we thought we'd be okay in the Spanish tour. The tour guide was nice, but spoke SO FAST. My husband said it would have been... More

Get there before you want to tour. They will only give English tours when they get the requisite amount of people. So you may go at 11 and not have your tour till 12. It's not the best system, but there you are. The monastery itself is replete with icons, statues , tapestries, religious art and altars. Tour about an... More

In the center of old Madrid is the convent of the Descalsas Reales, meaning the barefoot royales. Princess Juana, the daughter of Carlos I, founded this Franciscan nunnery in 1535, when she became a widow. The convent is still working with 22 nuns, but the building they have is also a museum with a lot of history and a lot... More
