Until the day we arrived in Weimar for a bit of tourism, we were unaware that in nearby Buchenwald lies the remains of a concentration camp. It turns out that the Soviets also used it for the same purpose after WWII with near the same results. There is plenty of history to be uncovered for the interested visitor. Our experience... More

There truly are no words to describe the profundity of the experience of walking through a concentration camp. My husband, 20 year old son, and I spent 2 1/2 hours there. We are Jews and of course were familiar with the Holocaust on many levels. However, seeing Buchenwald , being there, was like no other experience of our lives. I... More

We spent an entire day at Buchenwald, there is so much to learn and see. Entrance and parking is free. The site consists of the footprints of all the buildings that stood at the camp, one or two actual original building (the crematorium and the prison, I think), memorial areas and three museums/exhibition areas. You can (for 3 euros) get... More

The Concentration Camp Buchenwald Memorial is a must-see when in the area. Although everyone is familiar with the backgrounds and pictures of Nazi crimes, being in the actual sites takes it to a complete different level. I recommend getting a guided tour. Entrance is free. Bad weather recommended for adequate atmosphere More

I traveled to Weimar, Germany specifically to see Buchenwald. The drive to Buchenwald is just a few minutes north of Weimar, on a lovely quiet country road. When I arrived, the main street into the camp is called "Blood Road" -- a little ominous. You take the road about 3 miles into the camp area. There is a welcome center.... More

As the previous post states, Buchenwald is nothing like Auschwitz. Auschwitz was purposely preserved by the Poles as a place to remember the atrocities commited there whereas Buchenwald was seen as a mark of shame on the Germans and was allowed to decay. That being said, I enjoyed Buchenwald almost as much as Auschwitz for a number of reasons. First,... More

We had previously been to Auschwitz and wanted to see Buchenwald. In comparison, Buchenwald is nothing like Auschwitz. This is because Auschwitz is much more in tact and preserved. Much of Buchenwald was destroyed after the war. Goethe's oak, the crematorium, the bunkers, and shower rooms are still there. It is interesting to visit and worth a visit, however, if... More

...are still parts of history. I was glad to find out that much of this place is still standing. It was a strange place to be. For a little while after I first got there I did a lot of looking at the ground because I kept thinking about how incredable it was for me to be standing on the... More
